What is the cost of the camps?

Mini Guns:  $295 + GST
Edge of Excellence Power Skating Camps: $625 + GST
Ringette Camp: $476 + GST
Midget / College Elite Female Development Camp: $650 + GST
Junior / College Development Camp: $650 + GST

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

Upon payment, refunds will not be issued except when a doctor’s note from a qualified physician is provided, stating that the registered child is unable to participate in the skating camp for medical reasons. A $75 dollar processing fee will apply.

The above refund policy is only applicable to cancellations prior to the first day of camp.  Camp fees are not refundable, partially or in full, once camp has started.

 

 

 

 

Where are the hockey camps located? 

The camps in Kelowna take place at the Rutland Twin Arena

What does a typical day at camp look like?  

All of the Edge of Excellence camps are specifically directed at improving a skater’s explosive skating in all of the following areas:

  • Leg strength
  • Leg quickness
  • Leg flexibility
  • Trunk or core stability
  • Balance
  • Skating technique

With the exception of the Mini Guns camp which is a 5 day half-day camp, all of the other Edge of Excellence camps are a 5 day full-day camp.

On the first day, each player will have their skating videotaped and their skating will be analyzed by our coaches and recorded. 

Each day the player will get 2 1/2 hours ON ICE where they work on various skating techniques, and 2 hours of OFF-ICE.  The OFF-ICE session concentrates on resistance training, quick feet drills and core plyometrics, through a 1 hour session of simulated skating and video, and a 1 hour shooting and stick handling during the skills class. 

Throughout the week, there will also be an ice sessions where the skaters will skate in front of a projection screen.  On the last day there will be a review and scrimmage game.

 

 

 

When will I receive the camp schedule?

Camp schedules and groups are finalized in May.  You will be notified by an email.  Please look for an email from EdgeofExcellence@hotmail.com in the first part of June.  

 

 

 

What is the age group for the Mini Guns camp?

The Mini Guns camps are for players ages 6 & 7, born between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2014.  

 

 

 

 

What are the age groups for the Edge of Excellence Power Skating camp?

The Edge of Excellence Power Skating camps is for players ages 8 to 17, born between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2012.  The groups will be divided according to years of birth and into groups of ages 8 & 9, 10 & 11, 12 to 14 and 15 to 17.  

 

 

 

What are the age groups for the Ringette camp?

The Winnipeg Ringette Camp is for players ages 8 to 17, born between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2012.  The skaters will be divided in 2 age groups, ages 8 to 11 and 12 to 17.

 

 

 

Who can attend the Midget / College Elite Female Development camp?

The Midget / College Elite Female Development camp is for players who have played at the Midget AAA or College levels.  There will be a maximum of 20 skaters in this camp.

 

 

 

Who can attend the Junior / College Development camp?

The Junior / College Development camp is for players who have played or will play in Junior and College level.  There will be a maximum of 20 skaters in this camp.

Midget AAA or equivalent players will be considered on a conditional basis.  Please send your request to: EdgeofExcellence@hotmail.com.

 

 

 

What is the difference between the Edge of Excellence camps and the Pursuit of Excellence Camps?

The Edge of Excellence camps are power skating camps whereas the Pursuit of Excellence camp is a position specific skills camp.

All of the Edge of Excellence camps are specifically directed at improving a skater’s explosive skating in all of the following areas:

  • Leg strength
  • Leg quickness
  • Leg flexibility
  • Trunk or core stability
  • Balance
  • Skating technique

The Pursuit of Excellence Skills camp is a position specific, the cost is   $450 + GST and is offered in Kelowna July 27-31, 2020.  The camp consists of 3 position specific skills sessions: 

  • Session 1 is Skills & Development camp  (ages 9-12) 
  • Session 2 is Skills & Tactics for Defenders camp  (ages 13-17)
  • Session 3 is Elite Skills & Tactics camp (ages 13-17)

There is a maximum of 20 skaters and 4 goalies in each session.

Can goalies attend the camps?

The Edge of Excellence Power Skating camps are not goalie specific camps, but goalies will still benefit from our skating camps and are welcome to participate in the skating drills and be in the net for the drills that require a goalie. 

 

 

 

Can ringette players attend the regular Edge of Excellence Power Skating camps?

Yes, we can accommodate ringette players in the Edge of Excellence Power Skating camps.  The skating drills will be the same for hockey players as well as ringette players, however during the stick drills, the ringette players will be using a ring instead of a puck.  

If you would like to sign up your ringette player for a Edge of Excellence Power Skating camp, please comment in the notes of the registration that she is a ringette player. 

 

 

 

How many skaters will be in each group?  What is the instructor to player ratio?

We limit each group to 30 players.  Even though the group consist of about 30 players, you will find that there is still a lot of individual attention between the players and instructors in the ON-ICE as well as the OFF-ICE sessions.   The ratio of player to instructor is approximately seven to one.

 

 

 

Can I request that my child to be in the same group as his or her friends?

Yes, we will do our best to accommodate these kinds of requests.   The groups are assigned closer to the camp start date.

What happens when the camp is full?

Once the camp is full, a waiting list will be activated.  Please register on the waiting list and should a spot open up, we will contact you.

 

 

 

What do I need to bring to camp?

Full equipment will be worn for the On-Ice sessions.  Please ensure that the skates are sharp.  A 5/8” radius of hollow is recommended, which is a flatter hollow than the typical 3/8” sharpening.  

We will be using pucks, so please make sure to bring a stick each day and if possible, bring an older second stick to be used for the Off-Ice stickhandling and shooting sessions.

For Off-Ice workouts, please make sure you bring shorts, an extra pair of dry socks, a T-shirt and running shoes. The running shoes should have good support and should be well cushioned in the sole and heel for jumping exercises.

Do not leave valuables in the locker room or at the rink, Edge of Excellence is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

 

 

 

Are snacks and lunch provided?

Snacks and lunch are not provided.  Please pack plenty of snack items and a water bottle.  Please label the lunch bags, water bottles and other items.

 

 

 

Why does the registration form ask for jersey size?

Each skater will be provided with an Edge of Excellence jersey on the first day of camp.  The jerseys do fit smaller, please take this in consideration when registering your child.  Should you have ordered the wrong size, there will be extras, but in limited supply.

 

 

 

Will there be Edge of Excellence merchandise for purchase?

Yes.  Please look for the merchandise table at the camps.

When will I receive my child's skating video?

On the first day, each player will have their skating videotaped and their skating will be analyzed by our coaches and recorded.  Each player’s personal video will contain an analysis of their skating with voice-over and telestrator markings by the coaches doing the analysis. 

Please allow 4 weeks for the coaches to complete the videos. 

The videos can be viewed on-line, and you will receive an email that will contain a password and link to the video. 

The email will be sent to the email address you provided us with when you registered.  Please contact us if your email address has changed or if you have not received your video after 4 weeks and we will try to get the video out to you as soon as possible.
